News : Linder Statement on the 2008 State of the Union  [2/3/2008]
Today Congressman John Linder issued the following statement regarding President Bush’s 2008 State of the Union:   “There were two issues discussed tonight that struck me.  The President referenced the strong and steady progress we are making on border security, and we are.  At the end of 2007, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) announced that more than 150 miles of pedestrian fence and 115 miles of vehicle fence along the U.S.-Mexico border have been completed so far, and of the 854 miles mandated for completion, DHS plans to complete 392 miles between the California-Mexico and Arizona-Mexico borders by May 31, 2008, and an additional 30 miles along the Texas-Mexico border by December 31, 2008.  We must not stop there, we must complete the fence and we must also actively seek-out, punish, and deport illegal aliens and those who knowingly employ or sponsor them, so that we can quickly return sovereignty to our great nation.  The other, entitlement spending.  Congress must commit itself to easing the American taxpayer’s burden, and become an agent of real fiscal reform: one that no longer tolerates the government mortgaging our children’s future, but one that empowers them to make this nation more responsible and more independent than it has ever been.”   “I am glad that the President took the time in his State of the Union to address the decline in our economy.   I echo the President’s sentiments that we must trust Americans with their own money and empower them to grow our economy.  And Congress must act as well, by creating a system that will encourage growth rather than punish productivity.”
